What does a criminal defence lawyer cost?

Clarity in advance, no surprises afterwards. The government often contributes — and after an arrest the first assistance is even entirely free of charge. The first consultation is always without obligation.

How the costs are arranged

Arrested? The first assistance is free of charge

If you have been arrested, you have the right to a lawyer before and during the police interview. This duty-solicitor assistance is paid for in full by the government — having us at your side costs you nothing. Give the police our name as your preferred lawyer.

Legal aid (pro deo): the government contributes

Depending on your income and assets, you may qualify for legal aid through the Legal Aid Board (Raad voor Rechtsbijstand). In that case you pay only a personal contribution, set on the basis of your income. At the intake we assess straight away whether you qualify and apply for legal aid on your behalf.

Paying privately: hourly rate or fixed fee

If you do not qualify for legal aid, or if you deliberately choose to pay for representation, we work on an hourly rate or — where the case lends itself to it — with a fixed fee per stage (for example a single-judge hearing or an appeal). You know in advance where you stand; there are no surprises afterwards.

About fees and legal aid

What does the first consultation cost?

Nothing. The first consultation is without obligation and confidential. We discuss your situation, your prospects and the costs — only then do you decide whether to instruct us.

Do I qualify for pro deo (legal aid)?

That depends on your income and assets from two years ago (the reference year). We assess this straight away at the intake and apply for legal aid on your behalf with the Legal Aid Board (Raad voor Rechtsbijstand).

What is the personal contribution for legal aid?

The personal contribution is income-related and is set by the Legal Aid Board (Raad voor Rechtsbijstand). We calculate this with you in advance, so you know exactly what your case will cost.

Do I get my legal costs back if I am acquitted?

If your case ends without a penalty or measure, the court may award compensation for (part of) the costs of legal assistance. We submit that request on your behalf.

Can I pay in instalments?

By arrangement, a payment plan is often possible. Discuss it at the intake — cost should never be the reason to attend an interview or hearing without a defence.
